How the 2026 deduction is calculated

For 2026 the IRS business standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents a mile for driving from January 1 to June 30 and 76 cents a mile from July 1 to December 31. The medical and moving rate went from 20.5 to 23.5 cents on the same date. The charitable rate is set by law at 14 cents.

Each half of the year is multiplied by its own rate and the two are added together. Applying one rate to all of your miles over- or understates the deduction, which is why the result also shows both flat-rate figures for comparison.

Keep a log with the date, miles and business purpose of each trip. Without dates you can't split your miles between the two rates.

deduction = Jan–Jun miles × $0.725 + Jul–Dec miles × $0.76

Common questions

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?

For business driving, 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents a mile from July 1 to December 31, 2026. Medical and moving: 20.5 cents, then 23.5 cents. Charitable: 14 cents all year. Confirm on IRS.gov before you file.

Why are there two business rates in 2026?

The IRS announced a mid-year increase effective July 1, 2026 (Announcement 2026-11). Miles driven before July 1 still use the earlier 72.5-cent rate.

Can W-2 employees deduct mileage?

Generally no. Most employees can't deduct unreimbursed work mileage on their federal return. Self-employed people and business owners can. If you're an employee, ask your employer about mileage reimbursement.

Is commuting deductible?

No. Driving between your home and your regular place of work is commuting and isn't deductible. Trips from your workplace to clients, suppliers or job sites usually are.

Standard mileage rate or actual expenses?

You can use either method. To use the standard rate for a car you own, you generally have to choose it in the first year you use that car for business. Parking fees and tolls for business trips can be deducted on top of the standard rate.

What records do I need?

A mileage log with the date, starting point and destination, business purpose and miles for each trip, recorded at or near the time of the trip. Logging each trip in an app right after you drive makes this much easier.
