How the due date is calculated
Net terms count calendar days from the invoice date, weekends and holidays included. Net 30 on an invoice dated March 1 is due on March 31.
With EOM (end of month) terms, the count starts at the end of the month the invoice was issued in, so Net 30 EOM on March 10 is due 30 days after March 31.
If you turn on the weekend option, a due date that lands on a Saturday or Sunday moves to the following Monday. Put that rule in your payment terms so there is no argument about it.
Common questions
What does Net 30 mean?
The customer has 30 calendar days from the invoice date to pay the full amount. Net 15, Net 60 and Net 90 work the same way with a different number of days.
Does Net 30 count business days or calendar days?
Calendar days, unless your contract says otherwise. Weekends and holidays count. Some businesses move a weekend due date to the next business day, which you can turn on above.
What does Net 30 EOM mean?
End of month: the 30 days start at the end of the month the invoice was issued in, not on the invoice date. It gives the customer more time and makes month-end batches of invoices fall due together.
What does 2/10 Net 30 mean?
The customer can take a 2% discount if they pay within 10 days. Otherwise the full amount is due in 30 days.
What is the usual payment term in Europe?
Under the EU Late Payment Directive (2011/7/EU), if a business contract sets no payment period, payment is due 30 days after the invoice or the delivery. Businesses can agree longer periods, but more than 60 days must be expressly agreed and not grossly unfair to the supplier. Check your own country's rules.
When should I send a payment reminder?
A friendly note a few days before the due date, another on the due date and a firmer one about a week after works for most small businesses. The calculator suggests those three dates.
